In the world of home gym equipment, Rogue Fitness is a name that stands out for its commitment to quality and durability. The Rogue SML-2C Squat Stand fits this description. This review takes an in-depth look at this compact yet versatile piece of equipment, designed for serious lifters and home gym enthusiasts. The Rogue SML-2C Squat Stand is just the colored version of the Rogue SML-2. That is the only difference between the two!
Design and Build Quality
The first thing that strikes you about the Rogue SML-2C is its robust construction. Made from heavy-gauge steel and featuring a bolt-together design, this squat stand feels solid and secure. It can handle a substantial amount of weight, making it suitable for powerlifting and heavy lifting up to 1000lbs.
The stand comes with Westside hole spacing, which allows for precise placement of the J-cups and spotter arms through the bench and clean section of the bar and then 2” spacing above that for squatting. This is a significant advantage for individuals who want to fine-tune their lifting positions and work on specific exercises. The 3x3" 11-gauge steel uprights provide excellent stability, even when loaded with substantial weights.
Versatility
The SML-2C is designed for a wide range of strength training exercises, including squats, bench presses, overhead presses, cleans and more. The 5/8" hardware and pin and pipe safety systems make it easy to adjust the height quickly and securely, ensuring your safety during intense workouts.
Expandability
The unit is also compatible with a variety of Rogue's accessories, such as dip bars, plate storage, and landmines, making it a versatile addition to any home gym. This means you can expand your workout options without taking up a lot of space. I have taken my SML-2C and converted it into the centerpiece of my physical therapy training facility due to it’s good looks and ability to attach everything I need to conduct my rehab and training sessions to this.
The coolest feature is the expandability. Rogue has made this squat stand future proof. You can start out with the stand and add features to it like discussed above, but when you are ready to upgrade to make this close to a full rack, you can purchase the half-rack conversion kit!
Rogue's Half-Rack Conversion Kit
For those who want to take their Rogue SML-2C Squat Stand to the next level, Rogue Fitness offers a Half-Rack Conversion Kit. This kit can be a game-changer for individuals looking for even more workout options and additional safety features.
Features of the Half-Rack Conversion Kit:
1. Stability and Safety: The conversion kit adds two uprights and crossmembers to your SML-2C, transforming it into a half-rack. This enhances the overall stability of the setup, especially during exercises like pull-ups and kipping movements. It also provides more attachment points for additional add-on equipment, along with the option to have a “pin/pipe safety set” between the uprights of the squat stand and the additional half-rack uprights.
2. Pull-Up Bar: The conversion kit does not include a pull-up bar. If you get a version of the half-rack that matches the uprights of your squat stand, you can purchase an extra pull-up bar that will be more versatile for your specific training.
3. Plate Storage Posts: With the kit, you have the option to purchase plate storage posts that can help you keep your weights organized and easily accessible. This is a great space-saving feature for smaller home gyms or if you are using it for a commercial gym. This is the main reason for myself wanting to upgrade to this for my performance physical therapy practice.
4. Additional Attachments: Like the standalone SML-2 / SML-2C, the converted half-rack is compatible with a wide range of Rogue accessories. This means you can further customize your home gym/ garage gym/ commercial gym setup with attachments like dip bars, landmines, and more.
Considerations:
The Rogue Half-Rack Conversion Kit is an excellent addition to the SML-2C Squat Stand, but it does come at an additional cost. You'll need to weigh the benefits of added functionality, stability, and safety against your budget and available space. For those who want a complete home gym solution and are committed to intense and varied workouts, the kit can be a valuable investment. If you have the money up front, a better alternative than buying the squat stand and half rack conversion kit would be to just purchase one of Rogue’s other full rack options. This is more for someone who wants to get started with the price point of squat stand and then upgrade in the future, while keeping the high Rogue quality.
Pros:
1. Excellent build quality and durability.
2. Versatile and suitable for a wide range of exercises.
3. Compatibility with Rogue accessories for added functionality and ability to upgrade as your needs arise.
Cons:
1. Price: While the SML-2C is undoubtedly a high-quality piece of equipment, it may be on the expensive side for some home gym enthusiasts or small gym business owners looking to get started.
2. Spotter arms not included: The purchase of additional spotter arms is recommended for added safety, but this adds to the overall cost.
Conclusion
The Rogue SML-2C Squat Stand is a well-built, and versatile addition to any home gym. If you're serious about strength training and want a space-saving solution without compromising on quality, this squat stand is an excellent choice. While it may be a bit pricey, the investment in durability and versatility is well worth it for those committed to their fitness journey. With Rogue's reputation for quality, you can trust that the SML-2C will serve you well for years to come.
